Nine guests spoke and requested prayers for the militaiy, the judicial branch, the environment, among other issues, and a like number spoke to answer those prayers. Churches hope to promote change By PETER WILLIAMS News Editor They might not be able to change the world, but two Hertford churches are hop ing to start changing one block of the town starting this month. Hertford. United Meth odist Church and Spirit & Truth Ministries are join ing together to hold a block party on May 18. The event win be held on the block of Covent Garden between Dobbs and Market Streets between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. It’s not a public event, but designed to get people in that neighborhood and the congregations of the two churches talking. The effort melds an old church with a new one. Hertford UMC has roots that date back to the 1820s and is in a building that was built in 1901. Spirit & Truth Ministries has been around seven years, three of it under a differ ent name. It’s being led by Pastor Arthur Manigault who was excited about the effort. “This is something we as a church have been pray ing for,” Manigault said. Workers pull off 16th Tag Sale By PETER WILLIAMS News Editor A one-day sale Saturday netted > more than $10,000 for the i Perquimans County Volun teer Rescue Squad but it was far from a one-person effort. More than 100 people volun teered in some fashion for the 16th annual Tag Sale held by residents of Albemarle Plantation, said Jim Ermi, the chairman of the com mittee. The property owner’s See TAG SALE, 4 Cl e 0 H By PETER WILLIAMS News Editor A 29-year-old man who had seen “a vision” was arrested by Hertford po lice last week and charged with beating his mother with his fists and then hit ting her with a hammer so hard that he broke the hammer. Rocky Jerome Leary was arrested Friday and charged with as sault with a deadly , weapon with intent to seriously in jure for the attack against his 49-year-old mother. According to a Hertford police report Margaret Leary was beaten so badly she’d suffered a concussion and head trauma. Her eye socket was shattered. He was jailed on $15,000 bond and Police Chief Douglas Freeman said Monday he believes Leary is still in jail. May 17-18, at the John A. Holmes Athletic Complex in Edenton. More than a dozen vendors were there for opening day and more are expected as the season moves toward.The Missing Mill Mar ket is held each iWednesday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Key may give clue to man’s identity From staff reports The door key found on the body of a man discovered in the woods in April may provide the clue to his identity. The man was found on April 18 by two people scouting timber in the Bethel area. Based on the autopsy, the corpse had been there since November or December and the evidence point ed toward suicide. Sheriff Eric TUley said further investi gation found that a key was along with the items found in the man’s pockets. He said the sheriffs office has an idea of the room the man had been living in and if the key fits the lock of that room, they wiU have a better idea of the identity. Somebody from the sheriffs office plans to drive to Greenville later in the week to get the key, Tilley said.
